Tanning Tips from Christen

The Positive Effects of UV Exposure: Nature’s Skin Protection
It is commonly known that our natural tanning process provides protection against burning. Unlike some sunscreens, a tan provides reliable, full-spectrum (UV-A / UV-B) protection from burning. Your natural tan offers protection that doesn’t rub, sweat or wear off the way sun screen lotion can.

Vitamin D, Osteoporosis Prevention
Sunlight and sun-tanning beds that emit UV-B are reliable sources of vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary for our bodies to use the calcium we get in our diet.  This vitamin is found in few foods.  One study showed that vitamin D was largely lacking in the fortified milk supply in the U.S.  Your skin produces vitamin D naturally when exposed to sunlight.  A sunscreen of SPF 8 or higher has been found to disable and halt the skin’s ability to produce vitamin D.

Seasonal Depression Therapy
Sunlight and simulated sunlight “doses” are a successful treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder,   known as the “winter blues.” Sunlight exposure has been found to improve low winter moods. Indoor lighting, on the other hand, is generally perceived by the brain as near darkness.

A Strong Biological Clock For Optimal Health
Having well-synchronized circadian rhythms, or biological clock, results in a better quality sleep, daytime alertness, and optimal health in general. The more sunlight exposure you get during the day, the more in-sync with your environment your circadian rhythms will be.

Psoriasis Treatment
Exposure to UV-light is commonly prescribed by doctors to alleviate the unsightly appearance and discomfort of psoriasis. Drugs such as psoralens have been developed to work in conjunction with UV-light treatments. Those with psoriasis should consult their doctor before proceeding with any treatment program.

Jet Lag Prevention
“Doses” of sunlight or simulated sunlight timed carefully upon arrival in a new time zone, can re-set your body’s biological clock resulting in less day time drowsiness and better quality nighttime sleep.

Til next time…Stay Tan!

Hot Tips for summer haircare from Pureology…

Here are some great tips from Heidi, our on-site Stylist about protecting your hair this summer!

*Perform deep repair treatments twice a week to protect and repair sun damaged hair.

*Heading to the beach or pool? Don’t rinse out your conditioner. Leave conditioner in hair for maximum protection and extra moisturizing benefits.

*Your skin isn’t the only thing you have to worry about getting sun damage..Protect your hair as well with COLOURMAX before and after sun exposure.

*After swimming in the pool or ocean, shampoo hair with Pureology Purify Shampoo to clarify hair of color-damaging chemicals.

*Minimize breakage and gently detangle by spraying COLOURMAX on hair before combing hair with a wide tooth comb.

*Try to cut down on blow drying time. Let hair dry naturally a few days per week to preserve moisture levels. Apply COLOURMAX and INSTANT REPAIR to damp hair for added smoothness and to control flyaways when air drying.

*Use PUREOLOGY products daily to help protect hair from dryness and color fadeage. Each PUREOLOGY product contains our exclusive ANTIFADEComplex which has potent antioxidents and UVA/UVB sunscreens to help minimize oxidation, prevent damage and fadeage from UVA/UVB rays and maximize color retention from start to finish.

*Hair dries out in the summer so be sure to have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks and schedule a Summer Hair Revitalizer Treatment with your stylist to help prevent slpit ends.

If you haven’t tried the Purelogy products yet, stop on in and let us help you pick out the best one for your hair type!

See you soon…

Study: Long-Term Tanners – Less Breast Cancer

A study out of Sweden suggests a powerful connection between tanning and a decreased incidence of breast cancer and other cancers in women. The research followed nearly 50,000 Swedish women for 15 years. The participants ranged in age from 30 to 49 when the program began back in 1991-1992. Approximately 2,000 of the ladies received a cancer diagnosis during the study, with the following types reported: brain, colon-rectal, lung, ovarian and breast cancer.

In an effort to examine potential associations between UV exposure and the increased or decreased risk of various cancers – including breast cancer – the researchers reviewed the history of UV exposure for all the women when they were ages 10 to 29. The breast cancer rate was nearly 50 percent less among those subjects who had spent more than a week a year during those years enjoying moderate UV exposure (even on an annual vacation). The tanned Swedes also showed 30 percent less risk of developing an internal cancer as compared to their non-tanning counterparts.

The researchers – from the University of Oxford in England, the University of Oslo in Norway, The Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States – concluded there was no support to establish a negative link between overall cancer risk and ongoing UV exposure experienced earlier in life. In fact, the women who received UV exposure through indoor tanning or the sun experienced significantly fewer cases of internal ailments such as breast cancer.

The study’s authors intimate that the decreased propensity for illness can be attributed to vitamin D associated with increased UV exposure through tanning equipment or sunlight.

More Sun…Less Cancer?

Here is some new research about the positive effects of sun & tanning on our bodies:

Women who use sunbeds more than once a month for several decades had a 37 percent lower risk of contracting breast cancer, according to a new prospective study of nearly 50,000 Swedish women followed for 15 years — a strong addition to data suggesting that the benefits of regular UV exposure from any source outweigh the manageable risks of overexposure.

Researchers at the University of Oxford in England, the University of Oslo in Norway, The Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States published the study in the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention on-line this week. The study shows that women who spent more than 1 week a year on sunbathing vacations between ages 10-29 had a 30 percent lower overall risk of any internal cancer — and 44 percent fewer breast cancers — compared to non-tanning women.

“UV exposure earlier in life was related to reduced overall and breast cancer risk,” the authors reported. “Further research is needed to define the amount of solar or artificial UV exposure that may, or may not, be beneficial for cancer prevention.”

While the data did not suggest that cumulative UV exposure was protective, the authors believe that the vitamin D pathway inherent with UV exposure is the likely mechanism responsible for cancer risk reduction for those who sought sunlight or sunbeds.
